Family Traditions

It is that time of the year again when sharing and giving is on #boostmode and everybody seems to be excited. I feel worried as the list of my favorite people goes long and of course, you know what that means. But anyways.

How many are you in the family on Christmas eve? Cause there was a time in my life when my family was too big it would fit a jeepney or two on Christmas Eve.

My best Christmas ever was when the whole family tree is present and starts Christmas on December 23rd where we buy and prepare food and gifts to contribute. On the 24th, almost everybody is still cooking or grilling, others still wrapping last-minute gifts, and kids run around playing whatever. Gramma’s house is silent from 7 in the evening up to 10 or 11 as the adults in the house wake up to prepare the table. They wake the kids up before midnight for us to watch fireworks outside, overseeing the town within our wooden windows. At 12 midnight we eat and open gifts together and then sleep. But of course, it does not end there. We eat until 26th or 27th and then if there is still some food left, we head out to swim or have a picnic at the park. On the 28th we start to prepare for New Year’s Eve.

Those were the times when gadgets weren’t that popular and jobs did not require us to work on holidays such as this. Now, we do not only have jobs occupying our festive season, but we also have technology bombarding our families like a virus gone wild. Even if we can work at home, we have less and less time for our family relatives because we cannot live without the screen in front of us even for an hour or two.

I hope that we could bring back those times. I hope that we could start over. Start family traditions and keep them until our grandchildren come and practice it too. Wouldn’t that be fun to look forward to?
