The First Time I Read a Book

The first time I read a book,

it was in public, front of mom and dad’s workmates and friends

a book of rhymes upside down and they wondered how I did it

little did they know that mom and I have read the book countless times before bed

and I have memorized each rhyme through the pictures that come along with it.

The first time I read a book,

it was a bible storybook of Noah and other disciples in cute drawings

that I even tried to copy the drawings on the blank pages of the book.

The first time I read a book,

I did not know what pocketbooks were, what the logos of red and white symbolized

or that there were local and international pocketbooks and I was eleven

it was just there, thin with dark blue-colored cover page, a picture of the full moon and a few flowers surrounding the corners

I got to the middle and found myself reading about a man who fell in love with a woman who eventually invited him to her chambers, a glowing red room when it was pitch black

only to find out that she was a demon luring her prey and that was the time I got scared and did not want to read anymore.

The first time I read a book,

I noticed my elder sisters reading some short, thick books and I finally got the guts to ask about them

My elder sister told me to tag along the book rental shop one day and to my amazement is a magical shop with big shelves and a lot of strange books

it was when I got to read a book entitled Holly by Jude Deveraux and it was when I saw my sister’s different smile but she kept silent

I read the book from cover to cover for one whole week, with details too mature for a 12-year old, and when I finally got to finish it my sister told me that the author is one of the most erotic writers of all time (at that time). I blushed.

The first time I read a book,

it was The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, a book I got curious about as it changed my elder sister’s life forever.

Since then, I fell in love with books and realized it could flip one’s life in one turn of a page.

Since then, I read books as though it was my first, always curious, always excited, always emptying my mind, always eager to learn(even when it is not a fiction book, like Astronomy or Anatomy and Physiology).

Since then, I have been dreaming of becoming a famous writer around the world, who’ll write books to change lives, who shares books in accordance with what people need at the moment, hoping to hear how a book influenced their lives one way or another.

Since then, I never go out of the house without a book, even though I won’t be able to read it. I just have to carry one, cause you never know. I might read it or someone may need it.

Since then, I have been amazed by writers of all sorts, claiming to be their fan even if I haven’t read any of their works yet. Being a writer was big enough for me to support them with all my mind and heart.

Since then, I have been wishing to build a house filled with bookshelves filled with all the books around the world.
